Integrating Family Therapy with Children and Adolescents:

Know Where You Are, Where You’re Going, and How to Get There

There has been significant research to show that family therapy is an effective treatment for working with children and adolescents, but many therapists don't provide family therapy because they feel undertrained or intimidated by working with more than one client at a time.  In this workshop, we will ground ourselves in the family systems theoretical orientation, to see how it can inform case conceptualization of families and larger systems (e.g., extended family, community, schools, organizations).  We will review core concepts in family therapy that guide assessment and treatment.  We review principles of Behavioral Family Therapy, Attachment Based Family Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, Strategic Family Therapy, and how to use these principals to create lasting change in families, and provide tools in order for the therapist to know where they are and where they’re going when working with families.  We will discuss various disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, eating disorders), and how these principles can help in creating lasting change, and additionally understanding how high Expressed Emotion is key in relationship to relapse prevention.

W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist and director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy.  He has been working with children, adolescents and their families since 1998 in teens shelters, a residential treatment program, a wilderness program, drug and alcohol outpatient program, schools, community clinics, an in-home therapy program, and in private practice.  Dr. Sutton is trained in Narrative Family Therapy, Brief Strategic Family Therapy, Family Based Therapy for Anorexia, Attachment Based Family Therapy, Emotionally Focused Family Therapy, Strategic Family Therapy, MRI Model of Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Parenting with Love and Limits, and Behavioral Parent Therapy.  Dr. Sutton was on the Strategic Family Therapy team at the Mental Research Institute, and currently teaches and supervises therapists and therapists in training in family therapy through his Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy and it’s associated nonprofit, Bay Area Community Counseling.  He and his colleague, James Keim, LCSW, have developed their integrative, transdiagnostic four stage approach to working with families called Evolving Structural-Strategic Family Therapy (ESSFT).
WORKSHOPS
This six hour workshop is geared both towards clinicians new to family therapy as well as those experienced with family therapy.  We will review the basic concepts of family therapy, the theoretical underpinnings to our approach that incorporates structural family therapy, strategic family therapy, behavioral family therapy, cognitive behavioral family therapy, and attachment based family therapy.  We will then teach practical skills for working with families and providing a road map to effective treatment.  There will be opportunities for role play and learning creative, practical skills for helping families in order to have tools to use with clients.

ONE WAY MIRROR TRAINING
Participants who have taken the six hour workshops in family therapy will be invited to attend the 10 session live "one way mirror" training where one therapist from the training will volunteer to see the client*, while Dr. Sutton calls into the session, giving suggestions while the group watches the session via video camera.  The first 30 minutes of the training will be spent discussing the case, the plan for the session that day, and addressing the theory and techniques.  The client will then work with the therapist for 50 minutes while the team gives suggestions during the session.   After the session is over, the group will spend the last 30 minutes discussing what worked, what didn't, and why.  We will be able to go beyond just theory and technique and see how to apply the approaches in practice.
*IAP can not guarantee that we will have a client or that the client will come for all 10 sessions.  If this does happen, then we will use the time as a consultation group, may have people in the training bringing in their clients for a single session, or watch videos of sessions.  IAP will make every effort to have a client coming in for the therapy and we have been able to have a client each time, so the likelihood of not having a client is very low.

There will be a confirmation email going out one week before stating if so. If you have already paid, you will be reimbursed. If you have to cancel and do so before 24 hours of the event, you will be reimbursed. Audio and Video recordings may take place at the event. This would be for professional use and could show up on the IAP website. Any confidential information will be edited out at your discretion.
CONSULTATION GROUP
The Family Therapy Principles and Techniques with Children and Adolescents consultation group will be limited to 3 participants.  We will spend the first 10 min discussing a specific skill or issue related to family therapy, then will have two 20 min case presentation (presenting video of session is strongly encouraged).  Dr. Keith Sutton will lead the consultation group and will consult and use role play to help develop consultation group members' experience with using family therapy.  Participants are required to sign up for the series of five or four consultation sessions, and must have taken the six hour workshop in the particular theory), prior to joining the consultation group.  Dr. Sutton also offers individualized supervision in person, via Skype, or by phone for those unable to attend the group or seeking one on one consultation.
