An Introduction to EMDR

with W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D.
Workshops
Consult Group

An Introduction to Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) has been found to be an effective treatment for trauma. There is controversy surrounding the mechanisms of action in EMDR, but the research shows and the clinicians who use it find it very effective. It incorporates elements of cognitive therapy in its focus on cognitions and use of cognitive interweaves, dynamic therapy in its use of free association and catharsis, neurolinguistic programing in its use of distancing techniques, behavioral therapy in its use of imaginal exposure, and elements from other approaches. Dr. Sutton will teach the theory and techniques of EMDR, and discuss how to apply it to working with trauma and also how to integrate EMDR into everyday practice for a variety of other issues that aren't trauma based.  Participants will watch Dr. Sutton provide a live demonstration with a workshop participant, then participants will have a chance to practice EMDR with each other.   It is important to note that practicing EMDR with each other means working on one’s own traumas (big T or little t), and helping another participant with theirs.  This is can be very emotional, and be exhausting.  Participants should be prepared for this, and prepare their resources for support after practicing EMDR with each other.

**Please note that this workshop is only an introduction to EMDR, and will not constitute an EMDR certification upon completion of this course. For more information on meeting these qualifications, please visit the EMDR International Association's website: https://www.emdria.org or contact our office.

W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D. has been using Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) since 2005 with children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Sutton has taught and supervised interns in learning and using EMDR and has provided EMDR to both clients with PTSD as well as clients without PTSD.  Dr. Sutton integrates EMDR with his Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach to help clients defuse and become less reactive to maladaptive schemas. Dr. Sutton has a private practice in San Francisco and Corte Madera and is the director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy and its Bay Area Center for Anxiety, and its associated nonprofit, Bay Area Community Counseling..  He provides training and supervision of clinicians in using Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing in his practice.
WORKSHOPS
In this workshop, therapists will be introduced to the theory and technique of Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) and will have a chance to practice EMDR on other participants and have EMDR practiced on themselves. Dr. Sutton will present the protocol for EMDR with trauma, as well as incorporating EMDR in everyday practice with non-trauma clients.
