One-way mirror training in family therapy: Culturally informed & strength based

with Dr. Terry Soo-Hoo & W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D.
MIRROR SERIES

One-Way Mirror Training in Family Therapy: Culturally Informed & Strength Based

This series is being offered by one of IAP's associated organizations, the Family Institute of Berkeley (FIB). The Family Institute of Berkeley provides workshops, consultation, one-way mirror trainings, and clinical associateships/post-docs for licensed and pre-licensed therapists seeking to develop their skills in family therapy.  They are dedicated to helping clinicians add systemic therapy to their skills in order to make lasting change!

This series will discuss and demonstrate working with families using culturally informed and strength-based approaches including Strategic Therapy, MRI Brief Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focus Therapy, Family Systems, and others. The Mental Research Institute pioneered the brief therapy concept which means results can be achieved within a relatively short period of time. A major premise is the idea that all therapy is multicultural therapy. This means that every client brings to therapy a unique world and therefore the challenge for every therapy is for the therapist to be able to enter the unique world of each client. Dr. Soo-Hoo will discuss his way of integrating family therapy techniques, which he has named the Strength Based Culturally Informed Integrative Therapy (SBCIIT) approach. It is founded on the belief that people have natural strengths that can be activated and harnessed to solve their life problems. Because it is an integrative approach it is also flexible and adaptable to working with many types of problems and in different settings. This therapy method is especially adept at working with cultural differences as it is highly adaptable and therefore able to work within the unique world of the client. In addition, MRI is known for developing many innovative and creative (“out of the box”) techniques and interventions that have been very successful. These strategies and techniques can enhance effectiveness of therapists’ current methods.

Dr. Terry Soo-Hoo will be working with Dr. Keith Sutton, the Director of the Family Institute of Berkeley, and there will be a discussion of the theory as well as different interventions. In addition, the workshop will provide live demonstrations with clients of the theory concepts and techniques of the approach in real time. Participants will have the opportunity to observe Dr. Soo-Hoo working with a client or clients for ten sessions, through a “One Way Mirror” using Zoom. The Dr. Keith Sutton will be observing the sessions and will make observations and suggestions through an audio ear piece that the Dr. Soo-Hoo will be wearing. After the therapy session there will be a 30-minute review of the session and planning for the next session
Dr. Soo-Hoo is the former Clinical Director of the Mental Research Institute (MRI). He is currently professor at the California State University East Bay in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program. He completed his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to university teaching he devoted over twenty years as a psychologist in Community Mental Health Services in San Francisco working with a diverse range of people with many different psychological problems. His publications include topics on multi-cultural issues in psychotherapy and consultation, brief therapy and couples therapy. He has special interests in the area of innovative culturally relevant approaches to psychotherapy. He has also provided extensive presentations, training, supervision and consultation on his special approach Strength Based Culturally Informed Integrative Therapy to agencies and other professionals in many countries around the world. Dr. Soo-Hoo is Board Certified in Family and Couples Psychology (ABPP).

W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist and director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy. He has been working with children, adolescents and their families since 1998 in teens shelters, a residential treatment program, a wilderness program, drug and alcohol outpatient program, schools, community clinics, an in-home therapy program, and in private practice. Dr. Sutton is trained in Narrative Family Therapy, Brief Strategic Family Therapy, Family Based Therapy for Anorexia, Attachment Based Family Therapy, Emotionally Focused Family Therapy, Strategic Family Therapy, MRI Model of Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Parenting with Love and Limits, and Behavioral Parent Therapy. Dr. Sutton was on the Strategic Family Therapy team at the Mental Research Institute, and currently teaches and supervises therapists and therapists in training in family therapy through his Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy and it’s associated nonprofit, Bay Area Community Counseling. He and his colleague, James Keim, LCSW, have developed their integrative, transdiagnostic four stage approach to working with families called Evolving Structural-Strategic Family Therapy (ESSFT).
