Integrating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) training

with W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D.
Workshops
One Way Mirror
Consult Group

Integrating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

There is no question today that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is an important tool in a clinician's toolbox. Significant empirical research has demonstrated its effectiveness with issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, phobias, panic disorder, OCD, ADHD, social phobia, and other issues. Some clinicians had an overview class on CBT in graduate school, but many never were exposed to CBT beyond a couple hour lecture.

In this workshop, attendees will learn the theoretical underpinnings of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and various approaches that fall under the CBT umbrella including Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Exposure with Response Prevention, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy as well as theories outside of the CBT umbrella with important theories and techniques to be considered including Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Attachment Based Family Therapy.

Participants will then learn specific techniques related to behavioral interventions, such as monitoring symptoms, exposure therapy, mindfulness techniques, breathing retraining and other techniques and see videos of these interventions being used with clients. Participants will see the cognitive interventions being used with a client and learn techniques for eliciting thoughts and beliefs and helping clients develop cognitive flexibility and cognitive restructuring. Participants will get a chance to practice interceptive exposure practices, as well as role play eliciting thoughts and beliefs, as well as develop coping thoughts to address the core beliefs.

With the ground of theory and the learning of various practical techniques, the attendees will then review evidence based protocols for treating depression, generalized anxiety disorder, phobias, OCD, social phobia, PTSD, ADHD and a transdiagnostic approach to integrating CBT, DBT and ACT techniques.

W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist and director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy. He treats clients using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which he trained in during his graduate training as well as taking trainings at the Albert Ellis Institute, Beck Institute, and Edna Foa's Center for Treatment and Study of Anxiety. Dr. Sutton is also versed in a number of evidence based, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy treatments for ADHD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, Panic Attacks, Depression, OCD, and PTSD. Although his work is from a CBT frame, he also incorporates techniques from his training in Schema Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitivation Reprocessing, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Structural-Strategic Family Therapy.
WORKSHOPS
This six hour workshop is geared both towards clinicians new to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as those experienced with CBT. We will discuss the theoretical basis of CBT, its history, and how to integrate multiple other approaches into CBT, increasing its effectiveness. Creative ways of working with client's cognitions and techniques for behavioral interventions will also be taught and practiced. Finally, we will discuss the CBT approaches to specific diagnoses such as ADHD, GAD, phobias, depression, OCD, PTSD, and Panic Disorder.

ONE WAY MIRROR TRAINING
Participants who have taken the six-hour CBT workshops, will then be invited to attend the 10 session live "one way mirror" training*. In these trainings, one therapist from the training will volunteer to see the client, while Dr. Sutton calls into the session, giving suggestions while the group watches the session via video camera. The first 30 minutes of the training will be spent discussing the case, the plan for that day's session, and addressing the related theory and techniques. The client will then work with the therapist for 50 minutes while the team gives suggestions during the session. After the session is over, the group will spend the last 30 minutes discussing what worked, what didn't, and why. Through these "mirror trainings", the aim is for everybody to go beyond just the discussion of theory and technique, and learn how to apply the approaches in practice.

If you have already paid, you will be reimbursed. If you have to cancel and do so before 24 hours of the event, you will be reimbursed. Audio and Video recordings may take place at the event. This would be for professional use and could show up on the IAP website. Any confidential information will be edited out at your discretion.
CONSULTATION GROUP
These consultation groups will be limited to three participants. We will spend the first 10 minutes discussing a specific skill or issue related to CBT, then will have two 20-minute case presentation (presenting video of session is strongly encouraged). Dr. Sutton will lead the consultation group and will consult and use role play to help develop consultation group members experience with using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Participants are required to sign up for the series of five or four consultation sessions and must have taken the six hour workshop in the particular theory), prior to joining the consultation group. Dr. Sutton also offers individualized supervision in person, via Zoom, or by phone for those unable to attend the group or seeking one on one consultation.
