IAP's Bay Area Center for Adolescents is focused on working with preteens, teens, and young adults. It is commonly known that this transition from being a child to being and adult is not an easy one. As adolescents are developing their independence, they fumble, and struggle, and sometimes want help, but other times don't want any help at all. It can be extremely confusing for parents.
When things get really hard, adolescents can develop depression and anxiety, which can lead to unhealthy means of coping (e.g., substance abuse, cutting, suicidal feelings, eating disorders). It can also lead them to act out, becoming defiant at home, or having anger outbursts at school. It can be really scary when we see our children suffering, and not on the usual development path (e.g., socially isolated, struggling in school). |
Adolescence is also a time of discovering who we are, what our values are, and how to be with others. This can create lots of confusion about what friends they want to hang out with, how they want to be in romantic relationships, and how they will deal with temptations such as drugs, alcohol, pornography, and/or rule breaking.
At the Center for Adolescents, we work with adolescents and families to help them understand and adapt to the changes they're going through. We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address depression and anxiety, and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) for trauma. We work with families to help them create age and developmentally appropriate limits to help adolescents have good relationships with their families, develop good friendships, and do well in school. We also help adolescents talk to their parents about what is going on, and utilize their parents as resources, because despite popular thinking, preteens, teens, and young adults want to turn to their parents for advice and support. Otherwise, they get all of their wisdom from friends and the internet. Our therapists help parents to reinforce the work we're doing in session to create lasting change, and put our therapists out of a job. Contact us today to start getting help!
