nonclinical internships

Are you interested in learning more about the field of psychology? We have openings for nonclinical internships where undergraduate, graduate, and post undergraduate students can gain experience in the field of psychology. Nonclinical interns volunteer for the Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy group practice, providing marketing assistance, research assistance, and helping to facilitate workshops and trainings.  This is unpaid, fully remote learning position, although there are opportunities for occasional social dinners in person in the Bay Area as well as coming to the Summer Intensive training in person in Emeryville that is hybrid.

Nonclinical interns are able to attend IAP trainings and workshops for free (after a period of time) and are able to sit in on IAP's monthly meetings on Zoom where they observe the clinicians discussing what they've been learning recently (e.g., books, workshops, research) and then consult with each other on cases.  The clinicians have expertise in child, adolescent, and couples therapy, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and oppositional defiant disorder treatment, and Cognitive Behavioral, Emotionally Focused, and Family Systems approaches.  Our clinicians work as part of our six Specialty Centers: Center for Children, Center for Adolescents, Center for Couples, Center for Anxiety, Center for ADHD, and Oppositional and Conduct Disorder Clinic  It is important to note that none of our nonclinical internships involve direct work with clients, so if you are looking for direct client interaction, unfortunately it would not be possible in this internship.

Nonclinical interns attend the weekly Friday workday from 10am-1pm on Zoom, where they will work on the projects that need the most assistance. Examples of those projects include helping write blogs for our specialty centers, edit recordings from trainings to make them available online for others, helping with marketing, website editing, transcribing podcast interviews, community outreach, and other tasks. Internship lengths vary with some interns volunteering just for the summer, while we've had others stay over a year to volunteer with IAP and BACC.

Our nonclinical interns include individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. SFIAP is committed to fostering an inclusive, culturally responsive, and socially conscious learning environment. We value the perspectives and lived experiences of interns from historically underrepresented and marginalized communities, including but not limited to individuals from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ individuals, first-generation students, individuals with disabilities, and those from varied socioeconomic backgrounds. In alignment with IAP’s mission to advance cutting-edge treatment, research, and training in psychotherapy, we are committed to fostering a welcoming, supportive, and culturally responsive training environment. We believe that diverse perspectives strengthen professional learning, research engagement, and the overall quality of our training programs.

If you are interested in a nonclinical internship, please email [email protected] with the subject line "IAP Nonclinical Internship" and provide a cover letter explaining your interest in the field of psychology, your training (e.g., undergraduate work in psychology, graduate work in psychology), your interest in our organization and why you think you would be a good addition to our team.  We look forward to hearing from you.
