The Freedom of a Private Practice, with the Community of a Group Practice
|
The Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy (IAP) is opening its doors to clinicians who are interested in being part of a community dedicated to the growth of the field of psychotherapy. Clinicians at IAP are dedicated to keeping up to date on effective treatments, sharing different approaches/techniques, and evolving treatment approaches in order to create better outcomes for clients. IAP is a group practice of clinicians, most of whom have been teaching and practicing for many years, who come together to develop therapeutic skill, discuss cases, teach, find mutual support, and collaborate on writing and research. Research has found that therapists that are working as part of a group practice have better treatment outcomes due to collaborative learning, discussion, and innovation. The Freedom of Private Practice, with the Community of Group Practice
Because IAP started with experienced trainers who were already established in their private practice, our clinicians are able to see clients in their own office, our offices, and/or remotely. Many of us already had our office in our favorite neighborhood and a thriving private practice, so we created this hybrid group practice where you could keep your private practice, and have the community of a group practice. We do not require our clinicians to sign a non-compete clause, or to have to leave their practice to come to ours. Instead, you can see clients from our group practice, as well as private practice all in the same day from your own office. Many of our clinicians are building their private practice as they're joining our group practice. Some may have been working full-time at a hospital or community clinic, and are looking to make the transition to growing their private practice. |
We have various ways to be involved:
- Core Clinician - sees clients from many centers and large part of practice is seeing clients through IAP
- Specialist Clinician - sees clients from only one or a few Centers, sees the clients the Core Clinicians can't see, and sees a few clients through IAP
Our Speciality Centers are grounded in evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), and Family Systems. Some clinicians specialize in one approach and others use them all. To learn about our integrative approaches, you can listen to an interview with our director, Dr. Keith Sutton, on Shrink Rap Radio.

The Institute has six specialty centers, each with evidence-based theoretical grounding:

IAP only has licensed, experienced clinicians, so if you're not licensed yet, you can join our associated nonprofit!
Our nonprofit partner, Bay Area Community Counseling (BACC), is where clients in financial need can see clinicians in training, early career clinicians, and clinicians developing their abilities in treating specific issues. BACC offers a clinical associateship for those who are at the postdoc stage in their clinical career. Do you know someone, some group, or a foundation that would like to support therapy for those in need? You can donate today or pass on the donation information at BACC's website here. |

Clinicians who join IAP are contractors and can either see clients in the IAP offices in San Francisco, Marin, the East Bay, on the Peninsula, in the South Bay, or in their own offices or hybrid via remote therapy. The entire group meets on the second Monday of each month from 12-2pm via Zoom, and Core Clinicians who are new to our practice join the weekly consultation from 12-2pm on Mondays.

Income and Benefits of Being Part of IAP
Our clinicians can see as little as 10 clients, or as many clients as they want. Some clinicians earn $120,000 - $145,000 per year just seeing 10 clients a week, while others who want to see up to 30 clients per week can earn $400,000 per year. IAP clinicians can attend workshops and trainings for free, participate in our consultation groups, and receive individual consultation from our director, Dr. Keith Sutton, depending on how many clients they are seeing. IAP also has a profit sharing program, where clinicians involved in building the practice benefit from its success! Lastly, we also get to connect with our community through events like meeting up for dinner and other events.
If you're interested in becoming involved in a community of clinical excellence that is dedicated to each individual's growth, and are interested in working within the theoretical approaches our centers are grounded in, you may be a great fit for our organization!

Process for applying and joining:
Please include your interest in working with IAP and particularly, the Bay Area Center for ADHD, which is the main center we're currently hiring for. As a clinician at the Center for ADHD, you would also be able to see clients from other centers too. We are seeking clinicians who have experience with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and can work practically with clients, as well as clinicians that can work systemically with clients. All therapists in the practice work with adults, as well as either children, adolescents and/or young adults and their families. Please discuss your experience and expertise in these areas, and we encourage those with some experience and/or interest in developing their expertise in these areas to also apply. We are only taking applications for therapists who are currently interested in working both in person as well as online, so please let us know where you are practicing or where you would like to be practicing. We have clinicians in San Francisco, Marin County, the East Bay, the Peninsula and the South Bay. Lastly, please discuss how many clients you would be interested in seeing through IAP and share your career path and goals, as all of our clinicians have additional work they are doing, such as private practice, working in a hospital setting, community care setting, teaching, doing research, or other activities.
If it looks like you're a good match, you'll be asked to schedule a short interview with our director. If it seems like both would like to move forward, our director will schedule an interview, where you will share an adult case and child/adolescent case you've worked with, and discuss how he might work with those clients, to see if your approach and the practice's approach are a good fit. If hired, the next steps would be completing the onboarding paperwork, joining the weekly consultation group on Mondays, and going through 21 hours of training (a 6-hour CBT course, 6-hour Family Therapy course, and 9 hours of ADHD training). Once the training is complete, the clinician will be referred 1 adult and 1 child/adolescent client through IAP. The work with these clients will be evaluated during the weekly consultation meetings, and after 6-10 sessions, we'll decide the best way to move forward. We may decide the contractor's expertise has been established and they can have as many referrals as they'd like, or we may decide the person needs more support in developing the skills needed to provide treatment that is in line with the approaches that IAP uses. It is a lengthy process, but it in ensures that we have great clinicians as part of our clinical community!
