The Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy's clinicians are all dedicated to providing the best treatment possible, using up to date, evidence based treatments.  In addition to providing quality of care, many are leaders in the field, dedicated to furthering the field of psychotherapy through teaching and research.

W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D. - Director and Psychologist

Dr. Keith Sutton works with adolescents and adults providing individual, family, and couples therapy and psychological assessments.  He combines his training in cognitive behavioral therapy, family and couples therapy, and neuropsychological assessment in order to work with clients on the micro level of neurology to the macro level of working with the individuals and systems within the client's lives.  His warm, straightforward manner and focus on using strengths to overcome weakness helps clients to feel safe and understood in the therapy.  He provides both brief therapy and long-term therapy.

Bart Rubin, Ph.D. - Psychologist 

Dr. Rubin works with couples, families, children and adults and his areas of specialty include family/couples therapy, ADHD, juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, trauma, child abuse, supervision and training.  He has been teaching and training familiy/child therapists for the past 25 years.  Currently, he is Adjunct Professor at Alliant International University-San Francisco. He is a certified trainer and supervisor in Brief Strategic Family Therapy and is certified in both Multi-Dimensional Family Therapy and EMDR. He is also the Founder and Executive Director of The Family Institute of Pinole (FIP), one of the leading couples/family therapy training programs in the country, the Founder and Executive Director of the Trauma Center for Family and Community Violence of the Family Institute of Richmond, and is the Past President of the Association of Family Therapists of Northern California.

Anne-Olivia Shelton, Psy.D. - Psychologist

Dr. Shelton is a licensed psychologist who specializes in psychological assessments for children, adolescents, and adults.  She focuses on testing for ADHD, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and emotional issues.  Dr. Shelton is also on the training and supervisory staff of the Psychological Services Center in Oakland where she provides clinical and assessment supervision for doctoral trainees and provides training to the legal community on the assessment of adolescents.  She is also a Vendor Psychologist for the Regional Center of the East Bay where she performs Autism and Mental Retardation evaluation.

Amy Honigman, Ph.D.- Psychologist

Dr. Honigman is a clinical psychologist who has been practicing psychotherapy and assessment for over 25 years. She works with adolescents, families, and individual adults. Dr. Hongiman specializes in anxiety and mood disorders, ADD/ADHD, test anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. She specializes in using values oriented Mindfulness Based Cognitive-behavioral Therapy and is certified through the Institute of Mediation and Psychotherapy. From her experience as a neuropsychologist and working in educational settings, Dr. Honigman has developed an approach for helping teens and parents find the right balance between practical expectations and the stressful demands of transitioning into adulthood. Dr. Hongiman's pragmatic and warm manner promote a collaborative approach to therapy.

Virginia Reiss, M.S - Educational Psychologist, and Certified Educational Planner  

Virginia Reiss, M.S. is a licensed Educational Psychologist, and Certified Educational Planner.  For over 25 years Virginia has worked with children and their families to find solutions to the problems evidenced in the educational environment.  As a Credentialed School Psychologist, Virginia served with distinction in the public schools, working with children in elementary, middle schools and high schools.  Many of these children had special needs such as learning disabilities, emotional problems, and/or out of control behavior.

John C. Burton, Psy.D. - Psychologist

Dr. Burton is a graduate of the California Institute of Integral Studies, where he received the Institute Scholarship for excellence as a graduate student. He has worked with adults, children and families. He has successfully treated clients with depression, anxiety, phobias, PTSD, families working towards reunification, and issues related to adoption and attachment to caregivers. Dr. Burton also specializes in neuropsychological assessments for children.

Phil Boissiere, MFT- Marriage and Family Therapist

Phil Boissiere has spent many years specializing in the treatment of adults, adolescents, and families in San Francisco and the Bay Area. He believes that all clients deserve to be supported in an empathic caring environment, that emphasizes goals and resolution to presenting issues. His time as both a clinician and educator has given him a wealth of practical knowledge. He employs this knowledge along with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, during the treatment of clinical issues and the impact they can have on academics, families, and relationships.

Mai Le, MFT- Marriage and Family Therapist

Mai Le, MFT has a collaborative, integrative style and approach with a focus on developing authenticity, vitality, and resources for meeting life's challenges.  Mai works with couples at all stages of their relationships.  She uses Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a model that emphasizes transforming emotional experiences and strengthening relationships through creating secure bonds.  Mai's diverse personal and professional experience enriches her practice, and she has worked extensively with people dealing with cross-cultural issues as well as mixed-race and LGBT couples.  Mai has also trained in various somatic models and Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), a model that foster adaptive change in individuals through relational, experiential, and integrative techniques.

James Keim, MSW, LCSW - Oppositional Clinic Director and Licensed Social Worker

James Keim, MSW, LCSW is a psychotherapist, author, and clinical supervisor who specializes in therapy for oppositional-defiant difficulties.  He is co-author of one book and a contributor of chapters to eight others on topics including family therapy, child and adolescent behavior disorders, and marriage therapy.  He previously served as the Director of Training for Jay Haley at the Family Therapy Institute of Washington, DC, worked at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, and directed a small conference series, including the conference, Oppositional Youth, which was hosted at the Bethesda campus of the National Institutes of Health.

Joshua Israel, M.D. - Psychiatrist

Dr. Israel is a psychiatrist specializing in the assessment and psychopharmacology of Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD). He completed his medical internship and psychiatric residency through Harvard University at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1999, followed by a combined UCSF/San Francisco VA clinical fellowship. Dr. Israel is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCSF and has written and lectured widely on contemporary pharmacologic treatments in psychiatry. He sees patients in his private practice, and as an independent practitioner he is the consulting psychiatrist for the Institute of Advancement of Psychotherapy on AD/HD-related issues.

David Scott May, MD - Psychiatrist

David Scott May is a board certified child and adult psychiatrist that has 25 years of clinical experience with children, adolescents and adults following his completing his medical studies at UCSF. Dr. May specializes in performing psychiatric evaluations over these years to help patients determine their clinical options including various therapies as well as medication. Dr. May has extensive experience evaluating child and adults for Attention Deficit Disorder. Dr. May is an assistant clinical professor at UCLA as well having taught at Stanford.

Rebecca Robbins - Educational Therapist

Ms. Robbins is a certified Educational Therapist with over five years of experience working with AD/HD and dyslexic children and adults. Rebecca holds a California CLAD Teaching Credential, is a certified CHADD parent-to-parent instructor, and is the San Francisco chair for the advocacy organization CHADD. Rebecca Robbins is an insightful, compassionate problem-solver who loves working with her diverse clientele of energetic, dynamic thinkers. She's proud to offer a holistic practice that balances mainstream techniques with a well- developed sense of play to help clients reach their goals.

Marisa T. Mazza, Psy.D. - Psychologist

Dr. Mazza is a health psychologist who works with adults and youth. She provides individual, family and group therapy services. She utilizes cognitive, behavioral and mindfulness techniques to guide her clients through difficult situations. Dr. Mazza has a collaborative yet encouraging approach that highlights ones strengths in order to overcome life's obstacles. Her specialties include, but are not limited to anxiety disorders, depression, and chronic pain. She has experience working in medical and school settings. Dr. Mazza provides consultation to administration and staff about organizational development and mental health. Dr. Mazza is the Director of Training at Frugé Psychological Associates, Inc. and adjunct faculty at California Sate University.

Roxanne May, MFT - Marriage and Family Therapist

Roxanne May, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been in clinical practice for over a decade working extensively with couples, going through the various transitions of family and relationship.  Her primary approach of emotionally focused therapy is centered on an attachment view of love, which explores the risks in staying open and present in day to day, moment to moment emotional and physical connectedness. Given this way of working with couples Roxanne is able to address a wide range of core issues, including new children in the home , evolving stages of life, adolescents going off to college and caring for elderly parents.  Through this framework, Roxanne offers insight into negative coping strategies and builds on couples strengths creating space for joyful, spontaneous, interactions.

Bridget Whitlow, MFT - Marriage and Family Therapist

Bridget Whitlow is a psychotherapist that provides therapy for adolescent and adult individuals, couples, families, and groups using an integrative approach that combines evidenced-based treatments with a relational and strengths-based style. Bridget has clinical expertise and training in the treatment of eating disorders, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder, grief and loss, GLBT, and adult children of alcoholics concerns. Bridget is trained in multiple treatment modalities, including family-based "Maudsley" therapy, cognitive processing therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy. Bridget has also been actively involved in research projects and recently worked as one of the lead clinicians at UCSD Eating Disorders Treatment and Research Program on a multi-site NIMH study that compared two types of family therapy for adolescents with anorexia. Most recently, Bridget worked as the Clinical Director of Outpatient Services at New Dawn Eating Disorders Recovery Center in Sausalito. Currently, Bridget serves as the Resources Chair for the Marin and Sonoma-based nonprofit, Eating Disorders Recovery Support, Inc., and is an active Social Media Committee member at the Academy for Eating Disorders.

Jennifer Tan, LCSW - Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Jennifer is a licensed clinical social worker and has been practicing psychotherapy with adolescents, adults, and families in California for several years. Her expertise is working with adolescents and families in the field of recovery.  She has experience as a parent coach, a foster parent trainer, and as a guest speaker for psychology courses at colleges and training centers. Additionally, her clinical experiences include Children's Hospital Los Angeles, Phoenix House, Kaiser Hospital San Francisco, and non-profit agencies.  In 2011, she developed and founded TOWER, an outpatient substance abuse program for teens and their families. Jennifer currently sees adolescents, adults, and families.

Lucy Fine, MFT

Lucy Fine, licensed marriage and family therapist, has counseled couples and partnerships for over 25 years.  Employing multiple tools from various disciplines, including EFT (emotionally focused therapy), SCT (systems-centered training), years of client hours, deep inquiry, and four decades of yoga, martial arts,, and meditation practices, she offers a map for couples to navigate through the developing phases of a relationship.  At different stages of the relationship the goals change, and so do the contexts they find themselves in and the roles that they play in those contexts.  Ultimately, a couple or partnership is reaching for deeper and deeper layers of confidence in order to accomplish the goal of interconnectivity and individuation, as well as romance, intimacy, and sometimes parenting or other shared work responsibilities.  A committed partnership is a journey toward Self.  In a collaborative and integrative manner, Lucy trains couples to communicate the language of the heart while making use of strategies for accomplishing the goals they decide they want to reach together in partnership.

Paul Malkin, LCSW - Licensed Social Worker

Paul Malkin, LCSW, works with adults and children.  He has been in the field for over 30 years and has been using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for anxiety disorders for about 20 years.  This includes treatment for: social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, health anxiety, and phobias.  He has also been using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in his practice to help people cope better with their anxiety.  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance Commitment Therapy have been shown through research to be effective for the treatment of anxiety.  Paul Malkin, LCSW, has experience training other mental professionals as well as graduate students in using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
