Evolving Structural-Strategic Family Therapy (ESSFT) with Adolescents
Training

with

James Keim, LCSW
and W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D.

There has been significant research to show that family therapy is an effective treatment for working with children and adolescents.  Many therapists don't provide family therapy because they feel undertrained or intimidated by working with families.  One difficulty therapists find is that there are multiple theories of family therapy making it difficult to integrate the approaches.  Evolving Structural-Strategic Family Therapy provides a four step treatment approach that is a clear roadmap for working with families.  ESSFT utilizes theories and techniques from Structural Family Therapy, Strategic Family Therapy, Behavioral Family Therapy, Attachment Based Family Therapy, Neuroscience, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

James Keim, LCSW is a clinical social worker and director of the Bay Area Oppositional and Conduct Disorder Clinic.  He served as the Director of Training for Jay Haley and Cloe Madanes at the Family Therapy Institute of Washington, DC.  He is co-author with Cloe Madanes and Dinah Smelser of the book, The Violence of Men, and he has contributed chapters to eight other psychotherapy books.  He directed the conference series, Oppositional Youth, in the 1990's that was hosted at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, and today serves on the Adolescent Therapeutics advisory board organized under the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.  His presentation on Oppositional Defiant Disorder at the National Conference of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and received a "Best of 1996" rating for his presentation.

W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist and director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy.  He has been working with adolescents and their families for the past 13 years in teens shelters, a residential treatment program, a wilderness program, drug and alcohol outpatient program, schools, community clinics, an in-home therapy program, and in private practice.  Dr. Sutton trained in Narrative Family Therapy, Brief Strategic Family Therapy, Behavioral Family Therapy and Structural Family Therapy in his graduate training and trained at the Mental Research Institute with the Strategic Family Therapy Team.  He is the current past president of the Association of Family Therapists of Northern California.

This six hour workshop is geared both towards clinicians new to Family Therapy as well as those experienced with Family Therapy.  We will review the basic concepts of family therapy, the theoretical underpinnings to our approach that incorporates structural family therapy, strategic family therapy, behavioral family therapy, cognitive behavioral family therapy, and attachment based family therapy.  We will then teach practical skills for working with families and providing a road map to effective treatment.  There will be opportunities for role play and learning creative, practical skills for helping families in order to have tools to use with clients.

Live "One Way Mirror" Training - 10 Sessions - Fridays - 4 to 6pm - 20 CE

9/23, 9/30, 10/14, 10/21, 10/28, 11/4, 11/11, 11/18, 12/2, 12/9

$50 per session and $35 for CE

Participants who have taken the six hour Family Therapy workshop will be invited to attend the 10 session live "one way mirror" training where one therapist from the training will volunteer to see the client, while Jim Keim and Keith Sutton call into the session, giving suggestions while the group watches the session via video.  The first 30 minutes of the training will be spent discussing the case, the session that day, and addressing the theory and techniques.  The client will then work with the therapist for 50 minutes while the team gives suggestions.   The group will discuss the session for the last 30 minutes to discuss what worked, what didn't, and why.  We will be able to go beyond just theory and technique and see how to apply it in reality.  Two out of the ten sessions will be spent reviewing video of the session and practicing the techniques to deepen the learning in Family Therapy.

IAP can not guarantee that we will have a client or that the client will come for all 10 sessions.  If this does happen, then we will use the time as a consultation group, may have people in the training bringing in their clients for a single session, or watch videos of sessions.  IAP will make every effort to have a client coming in for the therapy and we have been able to have a client each time, so the likelihood of not having a client is very low.  Also, most attendees can not attend all 10 sessions, which is common.  The amount of 10 sessions is the same as taking a class, so unfortunately, we do not refund if the person can not make a session.  All proceeds from the training and client payments go to hiring trainers, equipment, and rent for the trainings.
