Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
At the Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy, we understand that deciding whether medication is appropriate for a child or adolescent is a big decision. Our psychiatrist, David May, MD, is a caring and supportive psychiatrist who takes great care to assess the difficulties that the child or adolescent is having and determine whether medication would be appropriate. Sometimes, it is determined that medication is not needed and that therapy can be the treatment of choice, but other times, medication may be the most effective treatment. Dr. May works with families to determine what is the best course of treatment for them and works closely to determine the dosage for the child or adolescent to find the right match. In the beginning of treatment, he checks in with parents frequently to determine how the medication is helping and will recommend any adjustments to be made. In addition to prescribing medication, Dr. May also provides individual and family therapy.
David Scott May, MD is a board certified child and adult psychiatrist that has 25 years of clinical experience with children, adolescents and adults following his completing his medical studies at UCSF.
