There is no question today that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is an important tool in a clinician’s toolbox. Significant empirical research has demonstrated its effectiveness with issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, phobias, panic disorder, OCD, ADHD, social phobia, and other issues. At IAP, we view CBT as a general theory influenced by Aaron Beck’s Cognitive Therapy (CT), Behavioral Theory, and Ellis’ Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT). This general theory provides a structure for a number of interventions culled from a variety of theoretical sources to improve treatment effectiveness. These sources include Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Schema Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Exposure with Response Prevention, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing, Narrative Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and others.
Joanne Chan, Psy.D. is a licensed psychologist who specializes in cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for anxiety disorders, particularly obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias, and compulsive hoarding. In addition to applying CBT interventions for anxiety, she utilizes mindfulness and dialectical behavior therapy strategies to augment the effectiveness of treatment. She is also the director of a hoarding services program developed through Peninsula Community Services Inc. and has also provided clinical supervision to doctoral students in psychology for several years. Dr. Chan received her academic training from the PGSP-Stanford Consortium and clinical experience at Pacific University, Kaiser Permanente, UCSF, Palo Alto VA Healthcare System, Santa Clara County Behavioral Health, Stanford University's Child and Adolescent Anxiety Clinic, and the OCD Institute at McLean Hospital.
W. Keith Sutton, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist and
director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychotherapy. He treats clients using Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy, which he trained in during his graduate training as well as taking
trainings at the Albert Ellis Institute, Beck Institute, and Edna Foa's Center
for Treatment and Study of Anxiety. Dr.
Sutton is also versed in a number of evidence based, Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy treatments for ADHD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, Panic
Attacks, Depression, OCD, and PTSD.
Although his work is from a CBT frame, he also incorporates techniques
from his training in Schema Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Narrative
Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance
Commitment Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitivation Reprocessing,
Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Structural-Strategic Family Therapy.
Workshop - September 16th - 10 to 5pm - 6 CE
$150 ($75 for students) and $15 for CE
This six hour workshop is geared both towards clinicians new to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as those experienced with CBT. We will discuss the theoretical basis of CBT, its history, and how to integrate multiple other approaches into CBT to increase effectiveness. Creative ways of working with client's cognitions and techniques for behavioral interventions will be taught and practiced. We will then discuss the CBT approaches to specific diagnoses such as ADHD, GAD, phobias, depression, OCD, PTSD, and Panic Disorder.
Live "One Way Mirror" Training - 10 Sessions - Fridays - 10 to 12pm - 20 CE
9/23, 9/30, 10/14, 10/21, 10/28, 11/4, 11/11, 11/18, 12/2, 12/9
$50 per session and $35 for CE
Participants who have taken the six hour CBT workshop will be invited to attend the 10 session live "one way mirror" training where one therapist from the training will volunteer to see the client, while Dr. Chan calls into the session, giving suggestions while the group watches the session via video. The first 30 minutes of the training will be spent discussing the case, the session that day, and addressing the theory and techniques. The client will then work with the therapist for 50 minutes while the team gives suggestions. The group will discuss the session for the last 30 minutes to discuss what worked, what didn't, and why. We will be able to go beyond just theory and technique and see how to apply it in reality. Two out of the ten sessions will be spent reviewing video of the session and practicing the techniques to deepen the learning in CBT.
IAP can not guarantee that we will have a client or that the client will come for all 10 sessions. If this does happen, then we will use the time as a consultation group, may have people in the training bringing in their clients for a single session, or watch videos of sessions. IAP will make every effort to have a client coming in for the therapy and we have been able to have a client each time, so the likelihood of not having a client is very low. Also, most attendees can not attend all 10 sessions, which is common. The amount of 10 sessions is the same as taking a class, so unfortunately, we do not refund if the person can not make a session. All proceeds from the training and client payments go to hiring trainers, equipment, and rent for the trainings.

9/23, 10/14, 10/28, 11/11, 12/2
