Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) Training

with

Robyn Walser, Ph.D.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based new model of behavioral treatment that emphasizes acceptance of emotion and thought while maintaining a focus on positive behavior change that is meaningful and consistent with personal values. ACT uses a variety of verbal, experiential and homework techniques plus mindfulness to help patients make experiential contact with previously avoided private events (thoughts, feelings, sensations), without excessive verbal involvement and control – and to make powerful life enhancing choices.

Robyn D. Walser, Ph.D. is Director of TL Consultation Services and works at the National Center for PTSD. As a licensed psychologist, she maintains an international training, consulting and therapy practice. Dr. Walser is an expert in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and has co-authored 3 books on ACT including a book on learning ACT. She also has expertise in traumatic stress and substance abuse and has authored a number of articles, chapters and books on these topics. She has been doing ACT workshops since 1998; training in multiple formats and for multiple client problems. Dr. Walser has presented her research findings and papers at international and national conferences, universities and hospital settings; and she has been invited to international conferences to speak about ACT. She is invested in developing innovative ways to translate science-into-practice and continues to do research and education on dissemination of ACT and other therapies. Dr. Walser is often referred to as a clinician’s clinician. Her workshops feature a combination of lecture and experiential exercises designed to provide a unique learning opportunity in this state-of-the-art intervention.

This six hour workshop is geared both towards clinicians new to Acceptance Commitment Therapy as well as those experienced with ACT.  This training will focus on demonstrating ACT techniques that may be broadly useful for intervening with multi-problem patients dealing with issues such as anxiety, substance abuse, depression, and PTSD and human struggle. The training will provide clinicians with a basic understanding of ACT, and with personal experiences that will allow further development of these skills based on their application.

Participants who have taken the six hour ACT workshop will be invited to attend the 10 session live "one way mirror" training where one therapist from the training will volunteer to see the client, while Dr. Walser calls into the session, giving suggestions while the group watches the session via video.  The first 30 minutes of the training will be spent discussing the case, the session that day, and addressing the theory and techniques.  The client will then work with the therapist for 50 minutes while the team gives suggestions.   The group will discuss the session for the last 30 minutes to discuss what worked, what didn't, and why.  We will be able to go beyond just theory and technique and see how to apply it in reality.  Two out of the ten sessions will be spent reviewing video of the session and practicing the techniques to deepen the learning in ACT.

IAP can not guarantee that we will have a client or that the client will come for all 10 sessions.  If this does happen, then we will use the time as a consultation group, may have people in the training bringing in their clients for a single session, or watch videos of sessions.  IAP will make every effort to have a client coming in for the therapy and we have been able to have a client each time, so the likelihood of not having a client is very low.  Also, most attendees can not attend all 10 sessions, which is common.  The amount of 10 sessions is the same as taking a class, so unfortunately, we do not refund if the person can not make a session.  All proceeds from the training and client payments go to hiring trainers, equipment, and rent for the trainings.
